Characteristics of the Zones
Agroclimatic characterization of the
Argentinian Humid Pampas
The Argentinian Humid Pampas is comprehended in a huge region placed in
between the parallels S 30º to S 40º and the meridians W 56º up to W 64º.
That imaginary quadrilateral includes part of the main agricultural provinces,
like Córdoba; Santa Fe; Buenos Aires and Entre Ríos. Weather pattern allows
growing very different crops without needing irrigation.
Soils, precipitations and
temperatures
From East to West, soils changes from loamy clays to loamy sands.
In the same way precipitations decreases from 1200 mm (48 inches) up to 600 mm
(24 inches) westwards.
Even though precipitations have a good distribution year round, 70 % of them
happen since spring till autumn.
As regards air and soil temperature, Argentina registers its highest records in
the North, and lowest in the South.

Frosts:
In this region, frosts are very variable, but there isn’t a single spot without
risk of it. Some years, you can have 10 frosts, and in the same place, another
year, perhaps 60. For the northern point of the Humid Pampa (ideal for corn and
soybeans) the medium date for the first frost is about the first days of June,
while in the extreme south (ideal for wheat) is close to the first days of April.
For the region, at least 230 days are free of frost, being this factor very
important to rise so many crops.
Production:
In the some places of the Humid Pampas provinces such as South of Córdoba;
South of Santa Fe and in the northern and central part of Buenos Aires mainly
corn and soybeans are cropped. Even though those are the main ones, there are
sub areas in which wheat, barley and rape oil seed are superior in extension,
such as the South of Buenos Aires province, or otherwise, as in the west of the
same province and East of La Pampa sunflowers and grain sorghum are cropped.
Potatoes are planted in the South East and Center of Buenos Aires, as well as
vegetables close to the main cities and pastures in diverse sites competing with
crops.
Average yields are 3,5 tn/ha for soybeans; 8 tn/ha for corn; 2 tn/ha for
sunflowers and 4 tn/ha for wheat without irrigation. There is a vast area on
which double crop of wheat/soybeans goals averages of 4 tn/ha for wheat and 2 tn/ha
for 2nd planting soybeans.
Depending on the ecological conditions, soybeans can reach 5,5 tn; corn 14 tn;
wheat 7 tn and sunflower 4 tn/ha. Beef cattle are mainly grown under grassland
systems and a low proportion of them under feedlot.
There also are some spots with excellent water in the underground that provides
outstanding conditions for irrigation, which by now are destined to corn (crop
or seed); soybeans and wheat.
